What is OVI? In short, it's the label for drunk driving in Ohio. In 2004, the Ohio legislature changed the statute to use the words "operating a vehicle under the influence" which in turn has given us the acronym OVI.
Prior to 2004, Ohio used the acronym OMVI, or "operating a motor vehicle under the influence". No matter the nomenclature used, it still means the same thing, drunk driving. With the change from OMVI to OVI also came other changes in the law that impact the charge, driving privileges, and other aspects of OVI.
